Privacy Policy for Claude Usage Bar

Claude Usage Bar is a browser extension that displays your Claude.ai usage limits (your current 5-hour session, your weekly all-models usage, and any other limit your plan has, such as a per-model weekly limit) and any extra-usage spending, in a small bar under the chat. It keeps a short history of those numbers on your device to show trends and forecasts, and can alert you as a limit nears. On the free plan, where Claude publishes no usage figures, it instead counts the messages you send in the current 5-hour window; see “Counting on the free plan” below.

What the extension accesses

While you are signed in to claude.ai, the extension reads your usage data from Claude’s own endpoints using the session that is already in your browser:

• Your organization id and name (to address the correct usage endpoint).
• Your usage figures: utilization percentages and reset times for each usage limit Claude reports (the 5-hour, 7-day all-models, and any per-model or per-product limit), and the names Claude gives those limits.
• Your extra-usage figures, if you use extra usage: the amount spent, your monthly spending cap, and, when Claude reports them, your credit balance and whether auto-reload is on.
• Which plan your account is on, taken from the capabilities and plan tier your organization already reports, so the extension can name your plan and say why there are no percentages on the free plan.

These reads happen roughly every five minutes for as long as the extension is installed and enabled, including when no claude.ai tab is open, so that the numbers you see are current rather than left over from your last visit. They stop when you turn the extension off on its Settings page.

Usage history kept on your device

To draw trends, forecast when a limit will run out, and show when you tend to use Claude, the extension keeps a history of the figures above: the percentage of each limit, its reset time, and the extra-usage amount, each with the time it was read, plus a log of events such as a limit running out or resetting. It is stored only in your browser, is thinned out after a week, and is deleted after sixty days. You can switch the history off, or clear it at any time, on the Settings page or the dashboard. The dashboard’s export buttons save a copy as a file on your own computer; nothing is uploaded.

Counting on the free plan

Claude does not publish usage percentages for free accounts, so there is nothing to read. To still show something useful, the extension counts the messages you send: it watches the page for new message bubbles appearing in the conversation and records a timestamp for each one. It never reads, stores, or transmits what any message says — only a running count and the times, which are kept in your browser and discarded once they fall outside the rolling 5-hour window. For the dashboard it also keeps how many messages were sent in each hour (counts only), for ninety days. This counting runs only on accounts where Claude reports no usage; on a paid plan it never starts.

Alerts

Alerts are off unless you turn them on. Whether an alert is due is worked out in your browser from the figures above. Alerts appear on your open claude.ai tabs, or, only if you switch on desktop notifications and your browser grants the permission, as system notifications.

How the data is used and stored

This data is used only to render the usage bar, the extension’s popup and dashboard, the toolbar badge, and the alerts you ask for. It is stored locally on your own device using the browser’s storage.local area (your preferences, the most recent usage numbers so the bar can show instantly, and the history described above).

What we do NOT do

• We do not send your data to the developer or to any third-party server. The only network requests the extension makes are to claude.ai, your own service.
• We do not sell or transfer your data to anyone.
• We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, creditworthiness, or any purpose unrelated to showing your usage.
• We do not read, store, or transmit the content of your conversations. On the free plan we count how many messages you have sent, as described above, and never what they contain.

Permissions

• storage: saves your preferences, last-seen usage numbers and the usage history locally.
• host access to https://claude.ai/*: reads your usage from your logged-in session. No other website is accessed.
• alarms: schedules the periodic refresh described above, and the alert for when a limit resets. It is a timer only, and gives the extension no additional access to your data.
• contextMenus: adds Refresh and the dashboard to the toolbar icon’s right-click menu.
• notifications (optional): requested only if you turn on desktop notifications for alerts, and only used for those.
• commands: the keyboard shortcuts to show or hide the bar and to open the popup.

Limited Use

Claude Usage Bar’s use of information complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Data accessed is used solely to provide the extension’s single user-facing purpose (showing your usage) and is not transferred off your device.

Removing your data

Uninstalling the extension removes everything it stored. You can clear the usage history from the extension’s Settings page or dashboard, and clear all of its data from chrome://extensions or your browser’s site/extension data tools.
